Have Any Of You Had Side Effects From Enbrel Injections?

A MySpondylitisTeam Member asked a question 💭

1.9% of people taking Enbrel injections have low back pain as a side effect. A Phase 4 study revealed that it is mostly women over 60 taking Enbrel for. 1-6 months who are affected. Unfortunately, I am one of the 1.9% of those taking Enbrel who had this side effect. I am trying to find out more about this topic but cannot locate the actual study. I want to know if this is temporary or if the pain never goes away. If it is temporary, how long before it gets better? Is it associated with any other… read more

I had another unacceptable gastrointestinal issue on Embrel. Maybe you have "breakthrough pain?" I had breakthrough pain on Humira & it was awful. I'm so sorry. I hope you feel better!

Thank you for responding. Sorry you were not able to take Enbrel but the GI issues can be very severe. The degree of GI issues that I am having is unpleasant but has improved and my rheumatologist thinks it is temporary. The back pain I am having is clearly not breakthrough pain. It started within 24 hours of my first injection so there had not been time for me to have received any benefit from Enbrel at that time. It is truly debilitating at this time. I can barely ambulate to the bathroom. Just getting out of bed or a recliner is extremely difficult due to the pain.
I have tried to obtain a copy of the Phase 4 Clinical Study (FDA) to find out more about this side effect. I think it was mentioned in the Lancet and Mayo Proceedings but do not have access to either of those resources. Only 1.9% of patients on Enbrel have this side effect and it is more common in women >60 and within the first 6 months of taking it. So few people have it that it isn't even in the information packet for the drug.
I have a strong needle phobia from having anaphylaxis with injections so I really had to push myself to try Enbrel..One of our daughters injected me and it was not easy for her, I know, but the potential benefts of Enbrel are too important for me to give up easily. I have been on such high doses of steroid for so long that it is imperative that I find a way to cut back on the steroid dose. There aren't many steroid sparing therapies available to me so, if this pain does not last too long,I will do my best to tolerate it for that benefit. Not sure what I will do if it turns out to last very long time or as long as I take it.

I appreciate your good wishes! Have you tried several biologics already? How about supplements and integrative medical practices? As young as you appear to be, you have many years left to enjoy life and I hope that you are able to do so.
