SI Joint Fusion

A MySpondylitisTeam Member asked a question 💭
Blue Ridge, GA

My pain specialist has been pushing to do an SI fusion. She says it’s done in the area where they do injections using propofol and it’s just a small incision. What concerns me is the recovery time. I had fusions done on 2 of my fingers and it took 10 weeks to recover. I live alone, my kids live 1 1/2 hours away and everyone works full time and non-working friends are unable to help due to health. Dr says very easy recovery; everything I’ve read says it’s very difficult. Any advice?

SI joint fusion is new to me, except for car crash related surgeries that I have seen. SpA related fusion raises questions about efficacy, its' long-term impact on life.

Anytime there is surgery, I ask myself, "What are the benefits and what are the risks? And, what is the success rate and failure rate of the surgeon(s). Is this surgery the best or most needed step to take right now? What ways will I need to modify my life and medical care following the surgery?" You probably have more questions.

You, along with so many here, teach me about SpA and life. I hope you share the answers to your questions. I look forward to what you write.

Thanks Pam for the bday wishes! Hoping someone has info on this. I know from working in the medical field these “magic fix” procedures & drugs come along and aren’t always what they seem.

My husband had SI Fusion Surgery a couple of years ago. He did OK with it and hasn't had any problems since. Recovery didn't take as long as his neck, lumbar and knee replacement surgeries. He doesn't have AS! The neck and lumbar surgeries were the result of a car accident. The others were from "Wear and Tear" on his body. He has been very active all his life. He is glad he had the SI surgery! May God guide you to make the right decision about YOUR possible surgery.

Tx so much Vicki! That does help in making a decision knowing someone has done well.

I don't know anything about SI infusions so I can't help you. Sorry, I would be as concerned though if I were in your situation. Prayers 🙏
