Does Light Sensitivity Happen From AS?

A MySpondylitisTeam Member asked a question 💭
North Bangor, NY

The sun was out very bright yesterday first the first time all winter. So I decided to go outside and sit. I had to face the dark paint on the House. My eyes started to burn badly. I had to come inside and shut the curtains and close my eyes. It was awful. Never had this before. This morning they feel all puffy. Anyone ever had this?

Be careful. Iritis or uveitis is common with AS and causes pain and light sensitivity. Eye drs can see if there are white cells in your eyes. It's your body attacking your eyes, and you can go blind.

This is iritis-a nasty side effect of AS- you need a course of steroid eye drops. It will not affect your sight, but can become excruciating!

Yes, I have to wear shades almost constantly. I have noticed over the last year or so, that my eyes have become extremely sensitive to normal daylight, no matter how dull it may be outside.

I've found that sometimes my AS causes light sensitivity and my eyes get red and really irritated. Almost like terrible dry eyes. So I started using systane eye drops every night after my shower. Have not had as much of a issue with them.
