Are Biologic Meds In The Same Family Of Medications As Tylenol And Antinflatory. I'm New To All Of This. Trying To Figure It All Out.
Hi Tina,
The short answer is no. NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are used to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and bring down a high temperature.
Biologicals include (from what I understand): Tumor Necrosis Factor-α (TNF) Inhibitors, B-Cell Inhibitors, Interleukin Inhibitors (the IL blockers) and Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors. They are self injected, transfusion and newer oral medication. The big difference is biologicals can either slow down or mostly eliminate the progression of disease like ankylosing spondylitis. So they attack the disease versus the symptom (like NSAIDS). The downside is they are expensive and they all have side effects (some serious). The long term efficacy is questionable too (I've seen research where TNF blockers are 50% less effective after 5 years.
Biologicals are a big step. I was on them for +15 years. TNF blockers worked pretty good but the efficacy was depleting (went from 1 injection a month to weekly). Plus I have nerve damage (neuropathy) and a lot of skin cancer (including melanoma). I changed to an IL class drug and developed very server IBD. I researched the JAK inhibitors and concluded they were too risking (for me).
I've had AS for +50 years. Now I'm taking 2.5mg of prednisone daily and it seems to work OK.
My best advise is to keep active in both body and spirit. Be positive and know you'll have bad days with better days to come.
I hope this helps a little.
I think they are a different class of drugs.
Thank you
I'm curious! Wich ingredient are you eating that miraculously cure you. I already eat an anti-oxydant diet naturally because i love fish, fruit etc.. and it didn't help.
Is Anyone Else Terrified Of Trying Biological Medicine? TB,Cancer, side Effects. Thanks
Taltz Or Cosentyx?
