Does Anyone Have Dercum’s Disease?

A MySpondylitisTeam Member asked a question 💭
Mississippi State, MS

Many people with autoimmune diseases like AS also have other autoimmune ones. Dercum’s is fatty lumps under the skin that are extremely painful and cause fibromyalgia and many other symptoms including neurological. It is a progressive disease that can lead to lymphedema. The fat is not removed by diet an exercise and can only be removed by surgery or liposuction. I was blow off by doctors as it is rare and was told I just have lipomas and just because I’m overweight but after research I know… read more

I’ve been looking for this! I’ve been diagnosed with Dercum’s Disease, lipedema and lymphedema. I was a tiny little person and have literally doubled my weight. Most doctors are absolutely horrible. Especially if you are a woman, they immediately blame weight gain on emotions, depression, or something having to do with your cycle. But that is not the case. This is absolutely out of control weight gain that seems to happen entirely on its own. Diet and exercise have minimal if any effect. It is maddening and painful, to say the least. I am currently looking for a new endocrinologist to find some new solutions. Not nearly enough research has been done, especially because the medical profession mostly still blames the victim.
I should mention that I developed multiple auto immune diseases at the exact same time. It’s not as if I developed AS, got depressed, and ate myself to 200 pounds. I got slammed with indescribable fatigue, stiffness, pain, and a 65-pound weight gain over a six week period. It took another 9 years to get diagnosed.
I’d love to hear from other people who have experienced these diseases. Maybe we can figure something out together.

@A MySpondylitisTeam Member. Almost all the time mine don’t hurt unless I press on them. But lately since my diabetes and thyroid disease levels been fluctuating seems I’m suddenly getting more of them and they are stinging often a lot like they are inflamed. They can block lymph nodes and firm in organs and harm organs but so far so good. Doctors seem ignorant if these. Usually dermatologists, endocrinologists and internists diagnose them. I probably should take some information from the internet to my endo and derm. Men tend to not get overweight with theirs. We both need to probably seek medical care for this to try to not let it progress as much. I e been to busy to pursue it lately. I gave up when went to a less educated dermatologist and was brushed off, Thanks for sharing this with me. We must avoid trans and saturated fats. Stay low fat and watch excessive carbs and calories. It won’t get rid of it but will help not get as many as fast. Wishing the best for you.

It’s all the same genetic nightmare! Genetic variation that is a box, that once opened, could be RA, AS, MS, glucose intolerance, type 2 diabetes etc. I say 23andMe genetic testing if you pay for the health testing will tell what genes are funky and is worth every penny! Copies can be taken to your healthcare provider so you can guide them to the proper diagnosis.

I am just like you. I have always been small Even after having 5 sons I still returned to my pre-pregnancy weight. % years ago I started to gain weight. I have gained 75 lbs in one year I have large fat deposits over each collarbone. I have tried every type of weight loss program with only a 10lb loss. Of which I had no control. Just all of a sudden it came off. I had not thought of going to an endocrinologist. Thank you so much. .
