Has Anyone Else Developed AS Symptoms Only After Receiving The Covid Vaccine?

A MySpondylitisTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

Within a few weeks of my first covid shot in 2021, I had pressure in my left eye, a month or two later, I developed pain in my achilles tendons. I was very healthy prior to the covid shots. I am now 54 and have SI joint pain and was diagnosed with AS. It could be coincidence, but I do wonder if the covid shots triggered this?

Hi Scott, yes, my syobegan about six months after the second COVID shot. I have poly neuropathy (my feet are always cold and I need an electric blanket to keep them warm) and Anklyosing Spondloarthritis which brings new symptoms all the time. Such a bummer to wonder what part of your body won't work and be in pain all day........I do aquatherapy twice a week ( in a heated pool) which is the only time my body feels "happy.". I guess this journey is not for the light hearted.

Bingo. I was dick in the first 4 hours, coughing like crazy. The day after, had difficulty to breath and walk. It got worse. Add the week after a ptosis, add to go in emergency because of my breathing. It took me a year to be able to walk almost like before. Add during the first year many neurological test, had a lit of fatigue, pain in legs, back, weird feeling on skin. Name it i got it. They did'nt find totally positive test. I also got the it's in your head. I saw recently a plastic surgeon that finally send me to a rhumathologist. Still waiting for a real diagnosis but i have now an achille tendonitis, had aweful rib pain and finger that can't bend all this on the good days. They told me it's the gallbladder but at some point it was all around not just on one side. Maybe in a few year they gonna admit it but for now they gonna told you it's impossible and thaf you are crazy. I'm pretty sure i was so sick it trigger it. And by the time i'm gonna have a diagnosis i will have see almost all doctor speciality.

Thanks Jody! My first infusion is tomorrow and I will try to remember to let you know how it goes. I am happy and hopeful that this biologic will help. I did not do well with methotrexate so this will be my second attempt at formal medication so fingers crossed.

I have not heard of this infusion but will discuss with my Rheum at next appointment. Thanks for that information! Have you tested positive for HLA-B27 gene? 80% of folks with that gene have AS, although most are diagnosed between ages 15-45. I believe that having the vaccine may have been the trigger to get my AS firing at age 66. I was a very healthy, active, working ER nurse until 4 months after second vaccine. Best of luck with your infustion, please post how you do with that.
