my condition has gotten worse quickly and forced me to stop working in July. i ordered a cane so I can get around easier but feel a bit self conscious about it.

I use a cane and if I have to walk a lot or stand a lot, I use a walker. I'm self conscious a lot too. I think it's normal, especially if people who look at you and cannot see anything wrong with you. I get questions from other people, which is okay but it feels like I'm bring judged sometimes. I also hate looking "weak" and that is me judging myself. I don't know, but these are wonderful tools to help me regardless what I ordered anybody else thinks. I have balance issues some days and lengthy standing or walking makes it worse. I'd rather have the cane and walker at hand than risk falling and making things worse. I feel I benefit from their use so I continue using them. I hope if the use of a cane helps, or any other device, that you can feel more empowered or secure with it. I am 57 and have used a cane since in my 20s. I tend to fall alot and feel less stable as the years go by. But I do truly understand. Hope this helps. Sending hugs to you.

I often use a cane, but a walker would be much better for even weight distribution since the cane tends to cause unilateral flares. The best is to move as normal as possible with our gate without assistance, but sometimes we simply do not have a choice. Never be embarrassed and use whatever means you need to remain mobile!

@A MySpondylitisTeam Member. Happy New Year Chloe! I understand well how you feel. But as Joshua pointed out, sometimes there's no other way to get from A to B. Using a cane is far better than falling because your body collapses from shooting pain from torn soft tissues or pinched nerves, or whatever. Do a Google search query, "beautiful canes for women" I'll see if i can get an attachment here for you. Shop for two that represent your style and/or interests. I found a gorgeous hand carved and lacquered one that i use around the house and occasionally take out. I get loads of compliments on it. I also found one that folds into 5 sections to easily put in my purse that quickly and easily self extends when i take it out. And if i ever need a walker, i will clear out our local craft shop of their Swarovski crystals and glue gun every inch of the chrome on it with bling. Just because my body is broken doesnt mean i can't dress it up. When we feel good mentally is when we begin to feel better physically. No shame should ever come to you, lady with a gorgeous name.☺️🙏 Here's a screenshot with several websites to shop...
