Has Anyone Else Been Diagnosed With A Tarlov (perineural) Cyst In Addition To AS? Now What Do I Do...?

A MySpondylitisTeam Member asked a question 💭

Well....the hits just keep on coming! In addition to AS, I'm also a humble new owner of a tarlov cyst. ðŸ’Ĩ It is located on my S3 & contains cerebral spinal fluid & nerve endings. ðŸ˜ģI've never heard of this condition prior to AS diagnosis? Any info or experiences with this one friends?

Hmmm @A MySpondylitisTeam Member, I've been having what I can only describe as nerve pain from the area of my trochanter that has the chondroid lesion in the marrow. A lot like sciatica I think, but not sure. I'm so sick of doctoring after all the kidney and breast dramas I recently went through during the stem cell process. I've just been sucking it up and recovery PT treating it. Ugh. Maybe I'll mention it to the Nephrologist when I see him this week. He's an Osteopath too so maybe he can tell me if I should investigate it further. Heavy sigh. One step sideways....

Hi Tam - does it bother or hurt you? My entire SI joint area (sacrum) always hurts, so I'm not sure how to distinguish? I'm waiting to hear back from the Neurosurgeon on next steps, if any? Im also getting ready to start on Enbrel too, but what if this is the cause of my pain...omgosh! I had an ovarian cyst in my teens & it just about took me out, literally left me curled up in a ball, so now I'm very curious & have more hesitations on starting Enbrel at all. Uggh...does this ever stop? Phooey!

@ Pitac Good morning & happy Friday! Thanks for reaching out 😉 I Googled my little head off again (wouldn't it be great if we were paid for our own research, I'd be a billionaire) it was a bit scary, but I found some greater understanding. I'm now wondering if this is what's causing my sudden weakness in my upper legs and why I'm jello when I first stand up now? (just recently started the last few weeks) hmmmm? I'm thankful to know yours aren't a bother to you or a health risk. (no need to add fuel to the fire) I've always said "if God giveth, than I keepeth." So I'm keeping my mine too. :) Just praying the S3 cyst doest burst, which is rare, but threatening if I understand correctly. ðŸĨš Sure makes me think different when I go to grab or pick something up now. Sometimes this disease & all its friends makes me feel robotic, or like I'm constructing a new dance trend. (I got moves like Jagger cause it feels like a daggar)
Thank you again for your support. Have a beautiful day & weekend. So grateful to know your neck is doing better...it really is truly AMAZING! Keep those eyes looking towards the sky. ðŸĪ— xoxo

I have one too. Mine is between my sacrum and psoas if I correctly recall. Like most cysts the human body produces, it is most likely benign and just needs monitoring periodically. Unless it's causing a problem in terms of pain and mobility nothing needs to be done about it. According to healthline.com, "Only 1% of people with perineural cysts experience symptoms."

It is always some extent of unnerving when new cysts are discovered. I find doing a Google search on them very helpful and worry relieving. Worry will cause more problems for you than just about anything. Worry leads to flares. Talk to your dr. A good rule of thumb, if they don't call you within 24 hours of a test, you're okay.

For whatever it's worth to your concerns, I also have one inside the vertebra body at L3, and one in the marrow at the top of one of my femurs. And dont get me started on the "ta-tas". Those feel like a bowl of rocks and are so pronounced that I no longer bother with self exams. I call them "God's natural implants". It'd be a full double mastectomy to remove them all. I've had 6 dr insisted biopsies, 4 deep tissue surgery lumpectomies, no cancer.

99% of cysts in the human body are harmless. Hope this helps you have a worry free weekend Renae!😌🙏
