Members openly shared their experiences with bamboo spine, describing the physical realities of living with complete spinal fusion from ankylosing spondylitis, including hunched postures, severe stiffness, being unable to straighten up after sitting, and chronic pain in the neck and lower back. Several members discussed unexpected complications such as esophageal spasms caused by bone spurs pressing on the esophagus, with practical management strategies including nitroglycerin pills and medication, as well as pain relief approaches ranging from fentanyl patches to neck decompression aids. A recurring theme was the emotional weight of navigating a rare disease with limited medical understanding, met with deep gratitude for the community's empathy, shared wisdom, and the profound comfort of not feeling alone in the journey.

I've just starting the bamboo stage. Others here have advanced bamboo spine. Some have a completed Bamboo spine with severe osteoporosis. They wear a protective torso, medically prescribed brace to prevent fractures.

The journey with AS is an adventure that requires a supportive community. I'm so grateful for the members and medical staff of myspondylitisteam. I probably couldn't go through this phase without you. This is rough.

My love for life gets me up and going. I have a lot of "fight" left to go for many years ahead in this journey. I want the best journey for others and hope what little I offer is beneficial to at least one person.

Please continue to write about your journey. Your journey, and that offered by everyone here, uplifts and inspires me, especially, on those days or weeks I can't write.

Thank you for asking this question!

Does anyone have difficulty with Esophageal Spasms? After reading Brian 2 's earlier post again, I am wondering if they are not caused by bone sours in the vertebra. Most of the time when I have trouble with it is when I am bent over too far over the computer! (in order to see) Lately, though, it has been happening when I lean back in my recliner. Last week, I had a episode of it that lasted 45 minutes and was felt thru to my back. I had to take a Nitro pill, which is what is used to treat ES. I am interested in hearing from others regarding this issue. Hugs to all! ❤️

@A MySpondylitisTeam Member, re: Bamboo Spine...I had no idea that I had it, except for the pain. My neck and lower back cause the most pain (in the spine, that is). I haven't had normal "Range of Motion" in my neck for years. I can't bend my neck to my shoulders on either side. My neck is definitely fused by AS and with lots of bone spurs. My shoulders are somewhat hunched forward. I also have Spondylolisthesis at L4-L5, so it is hard to tell if the pain and stiffness is related to that or AS. It is really hard to get up from chairs, even after sitting for a few moments. I can only stand for about 5 minutes before the pain kicks- in, in my lower back and my hips.
There was a good article on Bamboo Spine on this site yesterday. That is why I asked the question about other people having it. You sure have had your struggles, Brian. I am sorry and am praying for you.
