My Neck Was My First Clue About AS.

A MySpondylitisTeam Member asked a question πŸ’
Jefferson City, MO

With Degenerative Disc Disease Stage 4 my neck/cervical was dismissed. The pain was excruciating at work, holding a position to look down, draw blood, even lean forward taking a BP. Until the CT they took, only when I had to lie down and put my head in a holder for the scan I began to shake in such pain my moans were beyond my control. So loud. Once back in the ER stable I had 4 doctors come and neurology. The only thing besides the diagnosis from CT is I asked, "Is there anything I'm not… read more

Members rallied around someone navigating severe cervical pain from ankylosing spondylitis alongside the overwhelming challenge of communicating their limitations to employers, family, insurance companies, and disability services while awaiting approval. Several members shared encouragement to use every available resource, persist through the disability appeals process with legal help, prioritize mental health appointments alongside physical treatments, and advocate fiercely even when others cannot see or understand invisible pain. A recurring theme was the community's deep empathy for the isolating struggle of chronic illness, financial strain, and systemic barriers, met with unwavering support, practical solidarity, and reminders that persistence and self-advocacy are acts of strength worth celebrating.

Presently, I'm in the process of an appeal, (with my attorney) from the first denial. I was referred by my PCP to both Psychiatrist and Psychologist. I had so many appointments due to the physical issues and work I could not find time to cram anymore appointments. I asked her which one is more important to start with, she said, "both". So I did a number of weeks ago. I have both. 3 diagnosed independently. They diagnosed 3, the exact same and I'm getting help. I had so much Physical therapy that was twice a week. It was good to go but did not reduce my pain, especially in my neck. I did leave with some good takeaways. Thanks Pam for your kind reply and insight. We all just keep going forward with the help of our innerself and others.

@A MySpondylitisTeam Member, I agree, with DDD and several layers of arthritis in my neck, and my last MRI showed a cyst in my neck. Painful, I am sorry you have to work.
Oh, dear, shaking, moaning beyond control is allowed.
I had to see a physiologist before they granted me SSI. I really hope you can get on disability. I will be thinking of you. πŸ™
It is very hard communicating with family and anyone; they can't see your pain. They would have to walk in their shoes to understand.
Wishing you all the best, Lola. πŸ’—
God bless you, πŸ•ŠοΈ
