Has Anyone Had Their Parents Tested For The HLA-B27 Gene After They Were Positive?

A MySpondylitisTeam Member asked a question 💭

I’d like my parents to be tested for the gene. Both are good candidates 🥺. They won’t go to a Rheumatologist. So I’m wondering if a primary care doctor could test them for the gene.

Has anyone encouraged their parents to be tested ?

Members discussed the question of whether to pursue HLA-B27 genetic testing for family members after receiving a positive result themselves, with many sharing that their parents had already passed away or were reluctant to see specialists despite showing symptoms like back pain, stiffness, and mobility issues. Several members expressed mixed feelings about encouraging adult children to get tested, balancing the benefit of early detection against the psychological burden of feeling doomed before symptoms even appear, with one member planning to wait until her daughter has job benefits before pursuing rheumatology testing. A recurring theme was the desire to trace the genetic link through family history out of curiosity and understanding rather than blame, even though knowing the source doesn't change the diagnosis or treatment path.

@A MySpondylitisTeam Member - thank you for sharing this perspective 🤗. I needed to read this. I guess I’ve subconsciously held back on encouraging testing for all 3 of my adult children except for one. My 2nd born daughter has autoimmune symptoms - fatigue, previous problems with her back, gluten allergy, rosacea. Her Dad has Psoriatic Arthritis. Kind of wild that we both have that disease 🙃. She just finished her internship and currently looking for a job. Once she gets benefits, she’ll go to a Rheumatologist for testing. We’ve talked about it. She wants to get tested. So that’s our plan.

You’re right! It could create a sense of being doomed and that stress could actual bring on symptoms. I’m sure watching her Dad in pain is oh so hard enough. 😢. I think that’s why my Momma is hesitant and says “I don’t have it!” Although she has fused disc in her neck that cause pain & severe knee pain etc. She’s 82 yrs old so I get it. My Dad on the other hand is open to be being tested but won’t start with yet another doctor. 😭. So hoping his primary dr can order up the test for HLA-B27 - AS gene for those who are new 🤗 but not required to have AS 🤗

Good counsel. 🙏🏾Thank you Joshua 😃

@A MySpondylitisTeam Member it would be nice to know where it came from even though it doesn't change anything. I get it.

@A MySpondylitisTeam Member - it probably doesn’t matter to my parents either. I just wanted to trace it back. Not to point fingers or anything negative like that. I’m just curious and I think my grandmother may have had it. She was in so much pain 😢
